The Institute of Medical Scientists has been the home for Australia's laboratory and clinical science community for over five decades. We exist to set the standards, support the careers, and amplify the voice of medical scientists.
The Institute of Medical Scientists (IMS) is Australia's national peak body representing laboratory scientists, pathologists, and allied health professionals working across clinical, research, and diagnostic settings.
Founded in 1972, the IMS has grown from a small professional association into a nationally recognised authority on standards, education, and accreditation in the medical science sector.
We operate across all Australian states and territories, working closely with key partners nationwide.
From the laboratory bench to national policy, IMS members are at the heart of Australia's healthcare system.
Today the IMS represents over 4,200 members across all stages of their careers nationwide.
From students to senior fellows, IMS is a member-driven organisation shaped by its professionals.
The IMS is governed by a board of elected member representatives, supported by a national secretariat based in Canberra. The board provides strategic direction and oversight to ensure the Institute remains aligned with its mission and objectives. Together, they support the delivery of services, programs, and initiatives that benefit members and advance the medical science profession across Australia.
